Still true in research labs when you're talking about CO2 and Nitrogen
cylinders. As you say, it's all about them taking off like a rocket if the
top is knocked off.

I actually had a chemistry professor who claimed to have been chased down
the corridor by an errant cylinder. (He also claimed it managed to wiggle
around the corner).
