I had the good fortune to go to Turkey in 2007, traveling in the western part near the Aegean Coast. It's very arid, and construction is mostly stone, concrete, and brick. There is an abundance of clay, and we frequently saw primitive brick factories. They did have big dome kilns, no doubt fired with either natural gas, oil, or coal, but I was struck by one thing in particular - two men, one in front and one in back, moving probably a half ton of bricks balanced on a flatbed wagon with two large wheels. The factory yard was level, and they were just moving the bricks from one place to another, but still doing it by human-powered transport. I wish I had gotten a photograph of that.
