Thank-you Mike for providing that information.  For anyone who couldn't access it, you can find it just by Googling "Handbook of Clay Science PDF." It is extensive and contains a wealth of technical information, and is especially interesting for anyone who is interested in all the industrial applications of clay.  But it is curious that nowhere in the book (that I could find) does it ever mention pottery or the long tradition of clay in functional ceramics across the world.  That does seem a fairly major oversight.
